Our 2 hour Accessible Undara Lava Tube Tours are available daily, from 1 May – 30 October. The tour has a 7am departure and you should arrive 15 minutes prior to departure. Transport for this tour is on an air-conditioned wheelchair / accessible bus, which will take you into the National Park as our experienced guides share details on the history and geology of the lava tubes. On arrival it’s off the bus and into the Collins Road Cave which has a chairlift (pictured on the left hand side of the adjacent picture) providing access down into the lava tube. Here you’ll be surrounded by the cavernous rock walls, which are marbled with mineral colours and shaped by the flow of the long-since-gone lava. Pre-booking is essential and must be made by calling (07) 4062 5532 or email your enquiry, including preferred tour date to enquiries@undaratours.com.au and we will get back to you.

We’d like to thank and acknowledge funding received through the Access Project Grants – Access Project Grants – Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund funded by the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation – which has supported the enhancement of our accessibility features and capacity.

What You Need To Know Accessible Undara Tours

The Undara Lava Tubes are set amongst the savannah grasslands in the Undara Volcanic National Park. This is located a 3.5 – 4 hour drive southwest of Cairns and/or 4.5 – 5 hour drive northwest from Townsville and/or 2 hours east of Georgetown. Access to the tubes is by guided tour only, to protect the sensitive environment and ensure visitor safety. Our 2 hour Accessible Tour is designed for guests who use a wheelchair or have high level limited mobility. This tour visits 1 lava tube, Collins Road Cave, which is an excellent showcase of the lava tubes and is the only cave to have rare cave coral features. This tour includes a short journey along a formed gravel path, 1 flight of stairs, and boardwalk sections through the cave. To support mobility access, there is a motorised chairlift beside the stairs.

  • Accessible Tours depart at 7am.
  • The departure point of the Undara Lava Tube tours is 10kms from the Savannah Way turnoff on Undara Road, which is clearly sign posted for your convenience. You should arrive 15 minutes prior to your tour time, to allow sufficient time to park and check-in. You do not need a 4WD to access the tour departure point, as the road is fully sealed. The turn off to Undara Road is from the Gulf Developmental Road (National Highway 1), which is off the Kennedy Highway.
  • The Accessible Undara Lava Tubes Tour has a 2 hour duration, including travel to and from the tube, guided tour with commentary on nature and geology, and time spent exploring the Collins Road Cave.
  • Travel to and from the tube is on our accessible bus, which has a wheelchair lift, hand grabs and easy access. It is a distance of 600m return from where the bus pulls into the sloping boardwalk, that is reasonably steep, to Collins Road Cave.
  • Due to the pace of the motorised chairlift system, only 1 guest who uses a wheelchair can be accommodated per tour. Please ensure the wheelchair is lightweight and foldable, to ensure safe access and operation.
    • During the tour you will be transported to and from our tour departure point on Undara Road, into the Undara Volcanic National Park, in an air-conditioned wheelchair / accessible bus.
    • There are toilet facilities at the tour departure point.
    • Please wear covered shoes, a hat, sun safe clothing and sunscreen. Bring a large and full water bottle.
    • Remember to bring your camera / phone with plenty of memory available, you’ll need it!
