On the 3 hour Undara Lava Tube tours, you’ll explore 3 or more of the tunnels, including the showcase Arch Complex incorporating the Archway, Ewamian and Stephensons Tubes and stopping at another outreaching cave. Why do I need to book my tours in advance?

Undara Lava Tubes are accessible by guided tour only. They run at selected times and days. These tours tend to book out quickly, especially during peak periods like school holidays, winter months and long weekends. Once they’re full, they’re full! To ensure you don’t miss out, it’s best to book your tours well in advance, as we’d hate you to come all this way only to find out the tours are booked out.

What are the Undara Lava Tubes?

The Undara Lava Tubes are the longest lava tube cave system in the world, formed by a volcanic eruption 190,000 years ago.

When can I visit the Undara Lava Tubes?

Tours operate seasonally from 1 May to 30 October each year. Advance bookings are essential and can be made through this website.

How can I explore the Undara Lava Tubes?

Access is only available through guided tours; this is to protect the environment and ensure visitor safety. Tours last approximately 3 hours. This includes:

  • Transfers to and from the tour departure point to the Undara Volcanic National Park;
  • Walking on dirt tracks and boardwalks, exploring the savannah landscape and some of the lava tubes;
  • Interpretive commentary from experienced guides.

Please note there are some steps and staircases on the tour. A reasonable level of mobility and fitness is required.

What should I wear and bring for the tour?

Wear covered walking shoes, a hat, sun-safe clothing, and sunscreen. Bring a large water bottle and your camera or phone.

Are children allowed on the tours?

Yes, children are allowed on the tours and the experience is suitable for people of all ages. All guests must keep to the pathways and follow the direction of the Tour Guide. Please note the Undara Lava Tubes tour is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Where is the tour starting point / departure point?

The tour departure point is located 10kms along the Undara Road from the Savannah Way turn off and is clearly sign posted. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your tour departure, to ensure there is sufficient time for car parking and check in. You do not need a 4WD to get to the tour departure point, as the road to the departure point is fully sealed. We provide transport to and from the departure point, to the Undara Volcanic National Park.

What level of fitness is required for the tour?

You will require a low level of fitness to participate in the Undara Lava Tubes tour. There is a walking component on dirt tracks and boardwalks, with some steps and staircases to access the lava tube system. As such, this tour is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Can I take photos during the tour?

Yes, photography is encouraged to capture the stunning rock formations and unique features of the lava tubes.

Where can I stay when I do the Undara Lava Tube tour?

We recommend staying at the nearby Pinnarendi Station Stay & Cafe. Open seasonally, from late April until October, this property is locally owned and operated by the Atkinson family and is renowned for its spacious camping sites and awesome food and coffee – don’t miss their wood-fired sourdough based pizzas which you can dine in, takeaway or even grab one of ‘Last Nights Pizzas’ to take on the road with you. They have powered and unpowered sites and an amenity block. They also provide a dog sitting service to their guests participating in an Undara Lava Tube Tour. This should be pre-arranged directly with them and is subject to availability.

What is the Savannah Way Adventure Pass?

The Savannah Way Adventure Pass provides 2 guided tours. 1 at Undara Lava Tubes. 1 at Cobbold Gorge. These 2 attractions are both located in the Gulf Savannah, but are separated by around 234km of road, which takes around 3 hours to drive, pending conditions. You should plan to do them on separate days and allow time to stay at Cobbold Village. Both tours must be completed within a 7 day timeframe.

What level of fitness is required for Savannah Way Adventure Pass Tours?

A moderate level of fitness is recommended. Both tours involve walking on dirt tracks and sometimes uneven ground, with boardwalks, steps and staircases. You’ll be exploring lava tubes and sandstone escarpments, as well as walking over Cobbold Gorge’s Glass Bridge.

Is there a timeframe I need to complete the 2 tours in?

Yes – you must complete both tours within 7 days of each other. It does not matter which tour you do first. After your purchase is confirmed a friendly team member will contact you to book tour times and date for your tour at Undara.

Are these tours available all year?

No, both the Undara Lava Tube Tours and Cobbold Gorge Tours operate seasonally. The timeframe for tours to be booked and completed on the Savannah Way Pass is between 1 May and 30 October.

Do I need to stay to tour?

No – you don’t need to stay at Cobbold Village to do a Cobbold Gorge tour, but an extra discounted rate is provided to in-house guests making it highly recommended for the full experience. Cobbold Village has lots of great amenities, including an infinity swimming pool with swim up bar, café and licensed bistro, laundry facilities, camp kitchen, fire pits and dump points. You can choose to stay accommodated, in cabins and rooms, or book a powered or unpowered site for camper trailers, caravans, tents and swags. They also have ensuite sites where you can have your own bathroom. Alternatively, you can also choose to stay at nearby Forsayth, which has air conditioned rooms and powered sites at Finnigan’s Rest.

You do not need to stay at Undara to do the Undara Lava Tubes tour.

Can I bring my pets on tour with me?

No, both the Undara Lava Tube Tours and Cobbold Gorge Tours operate in protected areas. You can not bring pets with you on tour.
